It seems very appropriate that one of the first businesses in Pigeon Forge Tenn was a furnace and iron forge. The establishment of this business in Pigeon Forge Tenn was but the beginning of what has grown into one of the largest and most successful tourist attractions around.
The areas surrounding Pigeon Forge Tenn were used by the Cherokee and other eastern tribes as their hunting grounds. And the ways of the Cherokee Indian can still be seen in historic Cherokee North Carolina, just a short drive from beautiful Pigeon Forge Tenn. The trade routes along the Great Indian War Path from Virginia eventually carried a man by the name of Samuel Wear into this bountiful land, where he became a leading political figure in the establishment of North Carolina, Sevier County, and the state of Tennessee itself. The fort that Samuel Wear built at the mouth of Walden’s Creek still remains as a historic site in Pigeon Forge Tenn.
The signing of the Treaty of Dumplin Creek with the Cherokee and the establishment of Sevier County started a new era in the settlement of the Pigeon Forge Tenn area. Leading to the establishment of the furnace and iron forge by Isaac Love in 1820. This expansion helped to lead to the establishment of the first post office in the area, now know as Pigeon Forge.
The name Pigeon Forge has a two-fold meaning. The “forge” is based upon the furnace and iron forge, while the “pigeon” is based upon the bountiful supply of now extinct passenger pigeons that made the Little Pigeon river basin their home.
In 1907 Pigeon Forge Tenn boasted a mere 154 residents, but the call of the beautiful Smoky Mountains could not be resisted by settlers.
